Mucinous tumors of the exocrine pancreas.

چکیده
BACKGROUND Mucin-producing cystic neoplasms of the pancreas account for 1% of all malignant tumors of the pancreas. They include mucinous cystic neoplasms (MCNs) and mucinous ductal ectasia (MDE), also known as intraductal mucin-hypersecreting neoplasms. METHODS This review focuses on the clinical presentation, the role of diagnostic imaging modalities, and cyst fluid analysis preoperatively in the differentiation between these tumors and other nonneoplastic cysts of the pancreas. RESULTS MCNs and MDE evolve from pancreatic duct epithelium, produce an abundance of mucin, and are considered premalignant or malignant. While MCNs affect primarily middle-aged women with lesions occurring predominantly in the body and tail of the pancreas, MDE affects primarily men in the sixth or seventh decade with lesions more often located in the head of the pancreas. CONCLUSIONS All mucin-producing cystic tumors of both types require surgical resection because they are frankly malignant or premalignant. Survival rates of both tumors are better than those reported for ductal cell carcinomas. Future studies are needed to improve the accuracy of diagnosing these tumors preoperatively.

Intraductal papillary mucinous tumors of the pancreas: incidence, clinical findings and natural history.
Intraductal papillary-mucinous tumors of the pancreas are a category of recently described tumors of the exocrine pancreas. They were reported for the first time in 1982 [1] when Ohashi et al., based on the findings of four cases of mucous secreting pancreatic cancer, theorized that those cases belonged to a group of tumors with different features with respect to common pancreatic cancer. Some ...

BACKGROUND Simultaneous occurrence of exocrine and neuroendocrine tumors of the pancreas is very infrequent. We report a patient with an endocrine tumor in the pancreatic-duodenal area and extensive exocrine carcinoma involving the whole pancreas. CASE PRESENTATION A 69-year-old woman was hospitalized in May 2016 for epigastric pain and weight loss. Her past medical history revealed an undefi...

CONTEXT Cystic neoplasms, which are less common forms of exocrine pancreatic neoplasms, consist of mainly intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMN) and mucinous cystic neoplasms. Mucinous cystic neoplasms, unlike IPMN, are not associated with ductal growth, are usually multilocular in nature, and have ovarian type stroma. Mucinous cystadenocarcinoma is a type of mucinous cystic neoplasm m...
متن کاملClinicopathological characteristics of tumor-like lesions arising in gastric heterotopic pancreas
Heterotopic pancreas is defined as the presence of pancreatic tissue, outside its usual location, which lacks anatomical and vascular continuity with the pancreas proper. The heterotopic pancreas can accompany various lesions of the pancreas, such as acute pancreatitis, epithelial cyst, pancreatic pseudocyst, and exocrine and endocrine tumors. Tumor-like lesions arising from heterotopic pancrea...
متن کاملCentral pancreatectomy without anastomosis
BACKGROUND Central pancreatectomy has a unique application for lesions in the neck of the pancreas. It preserves the distal pancreas and its endocrine functions. It also preserves the spleen. METHODS This is a retrospective review of 10 patients who underwent central pancreatectomy without pancreatico-enteric anastomosis between October 2005 and May 2009. The surgical indications, operative o...
